How to authenticate your Prada handbag

Prada is a traditional Italian luxury fashion house. The name Prada stands for particularly high-quality manufacturing in the fashion industry. One of the easiest signs of a non-authentic or fake Prada product is poor workmanship. We'll show you a few tricks you can use to check authenticity. If you still have doubts or need help, you can use our authentication service.

Check the Prada logo

The Prada logo is very distinctive and contains details that can help authenticate your bag. The R should have a clear notch on the long stroke. The left stroke of both A's is thin, while the right stroke is thicker. Finally, the thicker right stroke of the A extends beyond the upper part of the letter into a serif font.

Check Prada logo authenticity

The inner lining with the characteristic Prada rope motif is an exception to the otherwise strict logo rules - there is no indentation on the leg of the R, nor does the A protrude on one side or have legs of different sizes. The Prada lettering should be inverted every second line between the rope motifs. Normally, this print is made of embossed jacquard nylon fabric in black. If this lining is missing, the bag is lined with leather (as is the case with some of the larger Saffiano bags).

Check the Prada serial number

Prada handbags have a small white label, usually in the inside pocket, with two or three black numbers indicating the factory number. This label is called a "Factory Tag" or "Quality Assurance Tag".

In addition, there is a color-matching ceramic brand plate or a sewn-on leather patch inside the bag with "Milano" or "Made in Italy" written on it. Exceptions apply to some smaller bags, where the brand marks are directly applied to the outside of the material or can be read on a simple internal label.

When checking the outside of the bag, make sure all brand labels are fully attached and perfectly centered.

Tip for sunglasses: Prada sunglasses have a serial number engraved on the inside of one temple.

Check the Prada hardware (metal parts, zippers)

One of Prada's hallmarks is that the hardware always has the same color. That is, everything is either silver or gold, never mixed.

The hardware is engraved with Prada, including locks, metal parts, feet, etc. Make sure the PRADA engraving is even, centered, and does not appear too narrow, thin, or too thick.

Check Prada Hardware Logo

When analyzing the zipper, you should pay attention to more than just the famous Prada logo. The fashion house uses certain brands of zippers, whose factory marks are clearly embossed on the underside of the zipper. These brands include Lampo, Opti, Ipi, Ykk, and Riri.

Check the leather of Prada bags

Genuine Prada bags are made from high-quality leather, often calfskin or lambskin, which should feel soft and supple. Fake leather can look real from a distance or in photos, but it feels stiff and rigid and sometimes has a plastic-like smell. Always make sure that the description of the leather on the authenticity card matches what you are holding in your hand. Prada has a special designation system for the leather of its bags, which I will explain in more detail in a separate post. But to make a long story short, you should always pay attention to the quality and description of the leather specified for the bag in question!

Check the stitching of a Prada bag

The stitching on most Prada bags is slightly angled. On fakes, the stitching is usually horizontal, the holes for the stitching are uneven, and the thread is very thin.

Check Prada authentication card

All Prada bags originally come with an authentication card and a product card. These may no longer be available once they enter the second-hand market, but if they are, you should definitely check them.

The authenticity card is made of white plastic, similar to a credit card, with the Prada logo and the inscription "Authenticity certificate card" in English and Italian. The back has fields that must be filled out by the Prada sales associate when the item is purchased. Often these fields are not filled out, but this should not be a cause for concern.

Check Prada Authenticity Card

The product card consists of black cardboard in a rectangular shape, with the logo embossed on the front. On the back of this card is a white sticker with information about the item itself. This information usually includes the product name, item code (product type), color, group name (materials used) and product number, which always begins with the item code. The logo rules mentioned above apply to the cards.

My Prada handbag is Made in China, can it be real?

A fun fact is that 20% of the entire Prada product range is manufactured in China, while the other 80% is produced in Italy and other European countries. So yes, your bag could have been made in China and still be authentic.
